Kamakura Ethical Lab exhibited at the "26th Kamando Ichiba" held on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at Kamakura Seaside Park Yuigahama area. This was a valuable opportunity to expand the circle of ethical initiatives through interaction with the local community.
■What is Kamando Ichiba?
Kamando Ichiba is a community-based event that has been continuously held since 2008 as a "modern market" that anyone can easily participate in. As part of town development, this event provides a place for local people to connect with each other. Participants can exchange information and wisdom about daily life, and enjoy shopping and light meals.
Notably, this event actively promotes bringing your own bags, dishes, and chopsticks as part of the "Kamando Zero Waste Movement." It is an ethical event that values environmental considerations in daily life.
Details can be found on the official Kamando Ichiba website: https://kamandoichiba.com
■Our Exhibition Content
Kamando Ichiba has three exhibition areas: "Selling Place," "Interacting Place," and "Eating Place." Kamakura Ethical Lab exhibited in the "Knowing Place" within the "Interacting Place" to promote its activities and exchange information.
This exhibition was carried out as part of the "Million Action Campaign 2025" aimed at spreading fair trade. For details, please see here
Main Activities
●Fair Trade Awareness Activities
We created a WEB page(https://www.kamakura-ethical-lab.org/summary)that clearly explains the concept and significance of fair trade, and visitors could view it via a 2D barcode.
●Ethical Action Awareness and Participatory Project
We set up a panel with the theme "What ethical actions do you want to see more deeply ingrained in the community?" and conducted a participatory project where visitors voted by placing stickers.
●Gratitude to Visitors
Participants in the above actions received a drip bag of fair trade coffee (Kamakura Roasted Coffee - Fair Trade Kamakura Blend) as a gift.
●Visual Information Provision
We provided an opportunity for visitors to deepen their understanding more intuitively through the screening of videos related to fair trade.
●Opportunity to Experience Fair Trade Products
We distributed free hemp bags (mattai) used for importing coffee beans with fair trade certification marks, allowing people to feel closer to fair trade products. We had active discussions with visitors to our booth about Kamakura City being certified as a Fair Trade Town, the basic concepts of fair trade and ethics, and the process of fair trade coffee reaching consumers from producers.
Results of the Ethical Action Voting Panel
A total of 678 votes were received from a wide range of age groups, from elementary school students to seniors. This voting was not just a collection of opinions; it also had a system where 1 yen per vote was donated to producers in developing countries. This became a meaningful initiative where everyone's participation directly led to support.
Multiple answers were possible, and voting was conducted by selecting from 14 items, including "eat everything" and "repair and reuse." As a result, the most supported ethical actions were those that can be easily practiced in daily life (such as eating everything and using reusable bags and bottles).
On the other hand, ethical actions that require time and cost (such as choosing fair trade food, eating organic vegetables, and purchasing traditional crafts) received relatively fewer votes. This result suggests the importance of starting with accessible actions when expanding efforts to create a sustainable society.

The data collected this time will be utilized for Kamakura Ethical Lab's future activity policies and Kamakura City's business plans. We will promote more effective ethical initiatives that reflect the voices of the citizens.
