Kamakura Fair Trade Declaration
Many of the products that support our daily lives are produced in developing countries. While internationalisation and the development of distribution have made our lives more convenient, they have also caused international issues such as economic disparities, environmental problems and conflicts.
Promoting fair trade, which aims to improve the lives and independence of vulnerable producers and workers by continuously purchasing raw materials and products from developing countries at fair prices, contributes to the formation of a sustainable society and the resolution of international issues, and is also a responsibility of Kamakura City, which states in its Citizens' Charter that it ’believes in peace and strives for friendship with the countries of the world. It is also the responsibility of Kamakura City, which states in its Citizens' Charter that it “believes in peace and strives for friendship with countries of the world”.
Our daily consumption behaviour is a choice that affects people, society and the environment around the world, and to think carefully about the impact and act accordingly is our role in improving the quality of our lives and in our desire to pass on a world-class Kamakura to future generations.
The City of Kamakura supports fair trade and believes that ‘one step by 100 people can change the world, rather than 100 steps by one person’, and declares that it will promote fair trade throughout the city in cooperation with citizens and businesses.29
