The "Kamakura Ethical Train" Set to Launch on the Enoden Line

KAMAKURA, JAPAN – August 28, 2026 — Kamakura Ethical Lab is pleased to announce its participation in the "Kamakura Ethical Train," an initiative organized by KOKUBU SHUTOKEN CORP. Beginning operations on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, on the Enoshima Electric Railway (Enoden), this special train invites passengers to reflect on the connection between daily life in Kamakura and global producer communities during their everyday commute.

Following joint efforts between Kamakura Ethical Lab and Kamakura City to raise public awareness, Kamakura was officially certified as a Fairtrade Town in March 2025. Kamakura Ethical Lab works alongside local residents, businesses, and municipal authorities to maintain this designation while promoting ethical consumption and sustainable living.

Transforming Daily Commutes into Opportunities for Reflection

The "Kamakura Ethical Train" turns Enoden’s iconic train cars into a medium for raising awareness about fair trade and ethical consumption. The custom exterior wrap features imagery of coffee plants, Kamakura’s underwater fireworks, local nature, and ocean breeze, alongside a pink and blue color scheme representing diversity and human connection across the supply chain.

At the heart of this project is "Kamakura Roasted Coffee: Fair Trade Kamakura Blend," a product developed through a community-driven selection process for its flavor and package design. Created in collaboration with MITSUMOTO COFFEE CO., LTD., KOKUBU SHUTOKEN CORP. Kamakura Ethical Lab, and local residents, the blend uses 100% Fairtrade-certified coffee beans. A portion of sales is donated to Kamakura City’s Green Space Conservation Fund.

The train wrap was designed by Toshihito Sawado of Kamakura Ethical Lab, who also designed the packaging for the Kamakura Blend.

Choosing a cup of coffee, considering the people and environments behind everyday products, and sharing those insights with others—these small steps pave the way toward a sustainable future. Through the "Kamakura Ethical Train," we hope to inspire residents and visitors alike to make choices that positively connect them with the wider world
