Coffee Project

Participatory community composting demonstration project in Kamakura.

Public and co Ltd. and Okaeri Ltd. started the project.

Let's take our residual waste to the town.
Zaiminza Community Composting Project

In autumn 2023, a community composting project started at the Hatsuhinode, a related information centre in Zaiminza, Kamakura. Community Composting is a communal composting system in which people share composting facilities with their neighbours to dispose of their own residences, shops, etc. New cycles and communication are created here in Zaiminza and in Kamakura. Anyone who lives or works in Kamakura can participate in this community composting in various ways. This is a place of practice where everyone can create a cycle together with the people of the town.

Why community composting?

Why? What Project

With the ageing of waste incineration facilities and the need to protect the environment, the time has come to consider how waste is disposed of. Focusing on residential waste, which is estimated to account for half of the waste we burn, we are proposing a form of ‘community composting’. If we think of our waste as a resource, it can also be our asset. We can reduce the amount of waste by doing community composting, and then use the compost in the community garden, where it will come back as vegetables and herbs. It is a wonderful community that is practising such a future with local people (currently about 50 people).
