Mista Agropecuaria Agricultural Cooperative (COOMAP)

COOMAP (Cooperativa Mista Agropecuaria de Paraguas Limitada), founded on 2 May 1957, is located in the city of Paraguas, in the south of the state of Minas Gerais.Construction of its headquarters began in 1961 and was completed in 1963.

In 1985, coffee storage and marketing activities began, and in 2006 a technical department was set up to address the needs of rural producers; COOMAP improved its coffee storage and reprocessing infrastructure in 2011 and obtained Fairtrade certification in 2015.

The aim of this certification is to improve the process of marketing coffee for member farmers and to improve the quality of life for them and their families. The majority of COOMAP members are family farmers and their main activity is growing coffee. They work on smallholdings from which they earn their living. Currently, COOMAP has 670 members and sells 160,000 bags of coffee per year (60 kg/bag), which means that each farmer sells just over 200 bags of coffee per year.

Paraguas has a population of 21,000, of which approximately 4,000 are rural. The southern part of the state of Minas Gerais is the largest arabica coffee-producing region in Brazil, and coffee is a major activity, accounting for 80% of the city's total agricultural production.

Fairtrade Premium.
Funds from the Fairtrade Premium are invested in technical assistance to ensure compliance with standards, production processes, farm maintenance and improved quality. Funds from the Fairtrade Premium were used to analyse the water quality of 400 plots of land, 80% of which were found to be unfit for human consumption. This has resulted in the installation of filters and chlorinators to purify up to 1,500, helping to protect nearby springs. And it has also led to the support of appropriate medical care and education.
